<p>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To perform efficient encoding of an interlace scanning video sequence. SOLUTION: An input picture (1) is sectioned into a small block of pixel data (2) and two fields within each block are inspected with regard to correlation (3). When the difference between the two fields in the block is small (if correlation is high), the block is encoded (6) by a frame encoding method by which all the lines in the block are sequentially scanned, and therefore, by using an efficiently designed inter-frame motion compensation method and an intra-frame subsampling method of color data. On the other hand, when the difference between the two fields in the block is large (that is, if the correlation is low), the block is encoded (5) by a field encoding process, where investigation of the correlation within each field (intra-field) and the correlation between each field and its adjacent field (inter-field) are intensified.</p> |
