PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a multi-color display EL element which can vary the emitted color and accordingly can establish the optimum color light emission. SOLUTION: On a glass board 1, a plurality of layers are formed one over another; i.e., a first electrode stripe 2, a first insulating layer 3, light emission layers 4-6 emitting light of different colors, red, green, blue, a second insulating layer 7, and a second electrode stripe 8 perpendicularly intersecting the first electrode 2. The light emission layer stripes 4-6 are formed along the first electrode 2, and their Sr1-xCaxS films are made of the same parent material for light emission, and the center material added to the parent material for light emission consists of Cu+ for the blue emissive layer 4, Ce3+ for the green emissive layer 5, and Eu2+ for the red emissive layer 6. The x-value of the Sr1-xCaxS film is made between 0.4 and 0.6, and thereby the optimum display coloring is established.
