PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To perform a fast and safe replacement processing in operation and to reconstruct the continuity of the sector lost during operation by executing a skip processing as the replacement processing of a later defect to be generated during operation and, thereafter, executing a slip processing (shift-in operation) at times of interrupting/re-applying power source. SOLUTION: When a late defect is generated during operation, a sector replaceing instruction is issued from a magnetic disk controller 6 and an MPU 2 calculates a clinder address and a head address from the physical position of the sector. Next, the MPU 2 executes a replacement to a substitutable sector in a track or the replacement to another track and stores addresses of the cylinder, the head and the sector of the place of the replacement in a nonvolatile memory 5. After power source is applied again, the MPU 2 reads out defective information from the memory 5 and when late defects are registered in the memory 5, it prepares defective information for every track again by combining the defective information and defective information of a medium at the time of shipment to execute the slip processing by using these information.
