A method for setting up and checking a telephone connection between two subscribers in a telecommunication network. The connection exchanges in the network communicate with corresponding H.323 gateway nodes via ISUP protocol, while the gateway nodes have connection to each other via a TCP/IP network. The signal protocol Q.931 in H.323 has been expanded to enable transfer of the ISUP message which cannot be handled by DSS1. <IMAGE>
