PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a data communication method by which a terminal at a transfer destination confirms an image in a short time without incurring much communication cost in the mail transfer operation by the transfer destination terminal. SOLUTION: In this data communication system, where a data communication device 21 with at least an image transmitting function, data communication devices 22, 26 with an image receiving function, terminals 23, 24, 25 with an electronic mail receiving function are interconnected via the Internet, when the data communication device 21 transmits an electronic mail including information denoting location of image data to the terminal 23 via the Internet, the data communication device 22 receives the electronic mail on behalf of the terminal 23, converts the information extracted from the electronic mail, stores the received electronic mail and the converted electronic mail, selects the stored electronic mail, based on an instruction from the terminal 23 of a transmission source of the electronic mail and transmits the selected electronic mail to the terminal 24 or 25.
