The use of liquid sulfur dioxide as a reaction medium enables a product of high purity to be obtained without problems associated with elimination of HF from the solid hexa-fluorophosphate produced. The process involves the reaction between LiF and PF5 in liquid SO2 at a temperature lower than 40 deg C.
