PURPOSE: A device which is improved for the brightness modulation of an image reproduction device is provided to make possible the high contrast and brightness of the image without overload to a television with a plasma display device. CONSTITUTION: The brightness modulation method comprises: dividing the displayed image(9) or a screen of a plasma display device by 4x5 block(10); decoding the signals to be displayed by RGB signal which is corresponding to red, green and blue and composing color image to be displayed; storing the signals in a buffer of each frame or each field; modulating the signals for a plasma display(3) in an image-signal coder(2); and dividing the video signals to nxm block, for example, 4x5 block in a first calculating unit(5) after taking a frame storing device(1) at the point of the beginning by the brightness modulation devices(5-8). Thereby, the thermal overload of the local area of the display device is prevented.
