PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To shorten a time taken until a system is started since a power source is turned on and to protect a photographic film. SOLUTION: At step 200, a diaphragm is moved to a totally closed position by a diaphragm driving motor. At step 202, a lamp is flickered by a lamp driver. At step 204, a reading control program is read from a storage device. At step 206, it is decided whether a photographic film is detected or not and the device is made stand by until a positive decision is obtd. When it is decided that the photographic film is inserted, the carrying of the photographic film is started at step 208. At step 210, reserve reading (pre-scan) is performed. Moreover, at the time of performing the pre-scan, the diaphragm totally closed is opened for a specified amount according to the condition when the pre-scan is performed. At step 212, main reading (fine scan) is performed while carrying in an opposite direction to that at the time of the pre-scan.
