PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To make the polarization conversion having high efficiency and the high uniformity of screen compatible. SOLUTION: The polarization conversion having high efficiency is performed by guiding a P-polarized light and an S-polarized light to different positions in the inlet part of a transparent rod 6 and providing a half-wave phase plate 8 which is arranged at a position conjugate with the inlet part of the transparent rod 6 in an image formation lens system and a position corresponding to one side of the P-polarized light and the S-polarized light and which rotates the linearly polarized light. Moreover, the uniformity of screen is obtained by forming the image of the outlet of the rod 6 in the vicinity of a spatial optical modulation element 9 with an image formation lens 7.
