The use of a solid heteropolyanion composition enables a redox conversion reaction of methacrolein to methacrylic acid with a good selectivity in methacrylic acid. The use of a composition of heteropolyanions is claimed of formula (I): Csn(NH4)mHpPMo12O40XxMey(VO)z (I) X = Si, Al, Zr or Ti; Me = Cu, Co, Fe, Ag, Ni, Mn, As, Sb or Mg; VO = vanadyl ion VO2+; n = 0 - 3; m = 0 - 3; p = 0 - 3; provided that: m + n + p = 3; x = 0 - 50; y = 0 - 3; z = 0 - 3; (limits inclusive). In the manufacture of methacrylic acid by the redox reaction: SOLID(oxidized) + methacrolein------------------------ SOLID(reduced) + methacrylic acid (1) An Independent claim is also included for the manufacture of methacrylic acid from methacrolein by a redox process using the composition described. |
