PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To simplify a system scale by providing a recognizing means which recognizes the modulation system of a facsimile machine when the facsimile machine is connected to a connecting means connecting the facsimile machine and a communication controlling means which enables the communication with the opposite communication party connected to a digital line network that is connected in accordance with the recognized modulation system. SOLUTION: When a signal line 9 is connected to the DSU: 3 of a facsimile machine 1 through the analog port of an ISDN communication device 10, a modem G3A: 22 recognizes the modulation system of the modem by examining a JM signal when the facsimile machine 1 returns the JM signal. And, after recognizing that a modem G3C: 2 meeting V.34 standard is connected, communication with the opposite communication devices 50 and 60 connected to an ISDN: 100 is performed by the modem G3A: 22 meeting the V.34 standard and the facsimile machine 1 to be connected to the analog port without using a modem G3B: 23 meeting V.17 standard.
