PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To give a proper distance in the retrieval of a part generating a character recognition error, to suppress the increment of retrieving noises and to shorten a processing time by previously storing character codes and their features, in the retrieval, retrieving a character, based on the character code and its corresponding feature, and collating the respective features in an area where the coincident rate of the character codes is more than a fixed value. SOLUTION: In this document filing device, a character recognition means 2 segements characters at the character recognition and stores the rectangular information for every character in a retrieving data storing part 10. A feature collation judging means 7 judges whether featres are collated or not from the rectangular shapes of respective character of an input keyword outputted from a retrieving feature preparing means 3, character rectangle information acquired from the storing part 10 and the number of characters to be collated out of the characters of the keyword. When judged that there is no collation of features, the judged result is regarded as non-coincidence between character strings stored in the storing part 10 and the input keyword.
