A transcription system is provided which includes a plurality of signal receivers 12A,12B for positioning adjacent a writing surface 28 and for receiving a position signal transmitted from the stylus 10 when the stylus is positioned adjacent the writing surface, the signal receivers producing timing signals in response to receiving the position signal from the stylus, the transcription system using the timing signals to determine a position of the stylus adjacent the writing surface. The system also includes a template 18 is provided with control sections 32. In use, the template is positioned on the writing surface and its position is determined by placing the stylus on calibration marks 40 and using the signal receivers to determine the positions of those marks. Each control section represents a different control function, such as save, erase, modify image, colour of image, the appropriate function being performed when the stylus is placed adjacent a control section. Different templates may be used and the user may customise a template. The template may represent a calculator.
