A transcription system is provided which includes a plurality of signal receivers (12A, 12B, Fig.1.) for positioning adjacent a writing surface (28) and for receiving a position signal transmitted from the stylus (10) when the stylus is positioned adjacent the writing surface, the signal receivers producing timing signals in response to receiving the position signal from the stylus, the transcription system using the timing signals to determine a position of the stylus adjacent the writing surface. The stylus comprises a position signal transmitter 129, and a housing 111 which removably receives a writing element 115. The writing element incorporates a battery 117 connector to an external contact which makes electrical contact with a contact in the housing when the writing element is electronics and transmitter incorporated into the stylus.
