An ignition system comprises a switch means 2 coupled to an ignition coil 12, means for periodically providing a path for bias current from a source of current to the switch, the bias current biasing the switch to conduction so as to provide a path for current flow from the source through the coil and switch and a spark gap means 29 coupled to the coil so that cessation of current flow from the source produces a spark across the spark gap means. An over voltage protection means 16 is coupled across the primary winding 13 of the coil thus providing a low impedance shunt path by passing the switch. The over-voltage protection means may include a silicon controlled rectifier 17 and a Zener diode 19 may be coupled between the gate and anode of the silicon controlled rectifier. The switch means may include a transistor 22. |
