A liquid detergent composition comprises from 80-100% of a mixture of ammonium alkyl benzene sulphonate wherein the alkyl group has from 8-16 carbon atoms, and a water-soluble nonionic synthetic detergent which is liquid at ambient temperature, the weight ratio of the sulphonate to the nonionic synthetic detergent being from 4:1 to 2:3. Preferably, the alkyl group of the alkyl benzene sulphonate is dodecyl and the nonionic detergent is a condensate of, an alkyl phenol such as octyl or nonyl phenol with 3-15 mols. of ethylene oxide, or C 11-13, C 14-15 or C 11-15 secondary alcohols with 3 to 12 mols. of ethylene oxide, or oleyl alcohol with 3-15 mols. of ethylene oxide; or an ethoxylated ethanolamide. The nonionic detergent may be partially replaced by a less soluble nonionic detergent such as a fatty acid alkanolamide or a fatty acid amine. The composition may be modified by the inclusion of 1À8 to 15% of an ethoxylated alcohol sulphate, wherein the alcohol has 11-15 carbon atoms, with up to 5 mols. of ethylene oxide per mol. of alcohol, and the sulphate cation is ammonium, alkali metal or amine. A suitable composition range is 40-65% of the ammonium alkyl benzene sulphonate, 25-40% of the nonionic synthetic detergent and 3-12% of the ethoxylated alcohol sulphate. Up to 20% of the composition may be water, a viscosity reducing agent, for example a lower alcohol, a perfume, a bacteriostat such as formalin and a colorant.
