A diesel electric locomotive has a diesel-driven AC generator (2) with a rectifier (5) supplying the traction motors and a second circuit for supplying power to the passenger carriages. This is an inverter unit (9), connected to a second rectifier (6) working on a second winding (4) of the generator. This rectifier is controllable and supplied with constant voltage, the inverter unit being operated cyclically at 16 2/3 Hz, using a working period of 28 ms and a pause period of 2 ms. An alternative arrangement obviates the need for a second generator winding and has instead a transformer between the output terminals of the generator and the second rectifier. |
