A hydrodynamic torque converter 1 comprises a turbine 12 and a lockup clutch 15 having a radially inner portion which is acted on by a energy storing element, eg diaphragm spring 21, of a torsional vibration damper 20. The damper 20 has opposing ramped surfaces 12a, 16a so that as relative rotation between the turbine 12 and clutch 15 occurs, the ramped surfaces 12a, 16a ride up on one another against a biassing force of the spring 21 to produce a damping action. Rolling elements, eg spheres 22, may be placed between the ramped surfaces 12a, 16a. Lockup clutch 15 is axially displaced by a piston 16 so that friction lining 18 engages with a housing 2, 3 which is driven by an engine. The turbine 12 has a hub 12b that drives an input shaft of a transmission. A stator 13 may be provided in the housing 2, 3 and coolant may be delivered to the friction lining 18 by conduits. |
