A system for cardiac assist and arrhythmia treatment comprises an implantable defibrillator for connection to the heart, an implantable blood pump (51) connectable between the circulatory system and the heart and a flow rate controller. The flow rate controller acts to reduce the volume of blood in a heart ventricle prior to defibrillation. A preferred blood pump comprises a rotor located within a hollow stator which both include magnets to create a magnetic suspension to magnetically support the rotor radially in the stator. A Lorentz force axial bearing is used to support the rotor axially in the stator. (Figs 1-3 not shown). A preferred flow rate controller comprises a heart measurement member eg a heart caliper, which measures the distention and/or contraction of a heart ventricle and an angular measurement device to measure the changes in angular position between the arms of the caliper. The measurement device may comprise an electronic eddy current position sensor or a pair of ultrasonic transducers positioned at opposing sides of the ventricle (Figs 8a-10 not shown).
