Mixtures containing tri-(organoperoxy)-boranes of the formula B(O-O-R) 3 , where R is a primary, secondary or tertiary aliphatic or alicyclic radical of at least 4 carbon atoms or an araliphatic radical, are obtained by reacting, at a temperature not above 90‹ C., one or more organic hydroperoxides of the formula R-OO-H with one or more alkyl orthoborates of the formula B(OR<SP>1</SP>) 3 , in which R<SP>1</SP> is an alkyl radical, the molar ratio of orthoborate to hydroperoxide being at least 5: 1 or, providing the reaction mixture is diluted with an inert organic solvent, at least 1: 3. (The term "solvent" denotes any liquid organic product other than an alkyl orthoborate which is inert under the reaction conditions. Phenolic compounds are obtained by oxidizing an aromatic compound having at least one nuclear hydrogen atom with a tri-(organoperoxy) borane obtained as above. Examples describe preparation of methoxy- or ethoxyphenols and cresols.</p> |
