PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a lightweight coated paper having excellent whiteness, opacity and offset printability by preparing a coating composition comprising a specific bowl-shaped polymer particle and an adhesive as essential components free from an inorganic filler. SOLUTION: This coating composition comprises a bowl-shaped polymer particle having 0.3-5μm average maximum diameter or its precursor particle and an adhesive as essential components. The composition containing <=30 wt.% calculated as total solid content of the adhesive using a water-soluble polymer such as a starch and a copolymer latex such as a styrene-butadiene latex, 10-120 pts.wt. based on 100 pts.wt. (calculated as solid content) of the adhesive of the bowl-shaped polymer particle or its precursor particle and <=20 pts.wt. based on 100 pts.wt. (calculated as solid content) of the adhesive of an organic pigment such as a plastic pigment, etc., as a pigment not using an inorganic pigment and having 1-10 wt.% solid content concentration is prepared. The composition is applied to a base paper in 0.2-3 g/m2 based on one side to give a lightweight coated paper.
