PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent biting-in or generation of locked condition at the start of meshing when a rack is slided and meshed with a gear at a standstill in such a condition as capable of starting rotation at any time. SOLUTION: In the teeth of a rack, the tip of a tooth 14 which is positioned at the end where meshing with a gear 21 is started, is inclined downward as chamfered inclining toward the end opposite the point La. Even if the tip of this tooth 14 runs against near the point Ga on the tooth tip face 27 of another tooth 24 of the gear 21 when the rack is sliding, a locked condition will never be generated because the tooth tip faces do not bear each other, and meshing will accordingly be generated easily in the event of such collision.
