PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a new method by which a carbyne carbon material of high quality having a highly controlled structure can be safely and industrially produced at a high yield and in high mass productivity without causing environmental pollution. SOLUTION: In this producing method of a carbon material, an acetylene deriv. expressed by the formula I of CX≡CX (X is F, Cl, Br or I and each X may be same or two or more may be different) is reacted with Mg or an Mg alloy in an aprotic solvent in the presence of an Li salt and/or a metal halide to produce a carbon material having a polyine structure expressed by the formula II of (-C≡C-)n ((n) is 2 to 1000000) or a cumulene structure expressed by the formula III of (=C=C=)n ((n) is 2 to 1000000) in a part or whole of the main chain structure.
