PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide the subject new protein that is human cathepsin L2 protein or has a homology to the cathepsin and has the cysteine protease activity or antigenicity and is useful for elucidation of the mechanism of pathogenesis and treatment of Alzheimer's disease and pulmonary emphysema. SOLUTION: This new substance is human-originating cathepsin L2 protein or a new human-originating cathepsin protein (or its salt) that has at least 80% homology to the human cathepsin L2 protein and also has the cysteine protease activity or an equivalent antigenicity, and has an amino acid sequences of No. 114 - No. 334, No. 14 - No. 334 or No. 1 - No. 334 in the amino acid sequence represented by the formula. These proteins participate in the metabolism of intracellular protein, antigen presentation, activation of hormone precursor and bone modification, and is useful for elucidation of the mechanism of pathogenesis and treatment of Alzheimer's disease, pulmonary emphysema, rheumatoid arthritis, muscular dystrophy, osteoporosis, neurodegenerative diseases, cancers and the like. |
