PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve the pulverizing property of pyrite, to reduce the scale of a pulverizing machine and to decrease wear of the pulverizing machine by hydrogenating pyrite and then pulverizing when the pyrite is to be pulverized and used as a catalyst. SOLUTION: The catalyst for liquefaction of coat which is preferably used in a liquefying process of coat is produced by hydrogenating pyrite and then pulverizing. When the hydrogenated pyrite catalyst is used for the liquefying reaction of coal, the average particle size of the catalyst is preferably <=10μm, and the temp. for the hydrogenation of the pyrite is preferably >=350 deg.C. Namely, in hydrogenating the pyrite, the hydrogenation is carried out at a temp. of >=350 deg.C so as to obtain fast transition into pyrrhotite and to obtain an effect to reduce wear of the pulverizing machine in a short time. Thereby, the pulverizing property is improved and wear of the pulverizing machine can be reduced.
