PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a structure for attaching a spring retainer in a frictional engagement device in which a snap ring for preventing the spring retainer from coming off, is disused so as to reduce the number of components in order to reduce the cost, and which can enhance the ease of assembly. SOLUTION: Inner spline grooves 6a adapted to be engaged with outer spline teeth of a friction plate 14 are formed in the inner peripheral surface of a drum 6, and a spring retainer 13 for supporting a return spring 12 energizing a piston 10 is interposed between the piston 10 and the friction plate 14. A part of the outer spline teeth of the friction plate 14 is made toothless, and a plurality of axially extending protrusions 13 are formed being projected from the outer peripheral part of the spring retainer 13b. The protrusions 13b are inserted in gaps defined between the inner spline grooves 6a of the drum 6 and the toothless part of the friction plate 14, and the tip ends of the protrusions 13b are supported by a snap ring 16 attached to the drum 6, for preventing the friction plate from coming off.
