PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a positioning device for a recording head wherein it is possible to eliminate abrasion of an encoder at the upper edge section and the encoder is surely attached vertically, thereby improving reliability of position detecting and it is possible to prevent the encoder from coming off from a position detecting sensor and to facilitate the positioning of the position detecting sensor at the attaching thereof. SOLUTION: In this positioning device for a recording head, when a carriage 18 is conveyed to a predetermined direction, an under end edge section of an encoder 50 is pressed by being slid with respect to an under sliding section 53B of an encoder pressing section 53 and a distance between an inner face of a recess section 52A of a position detecting sensor 52 and the encoder 50 is maintained constant. A top end edge of the under sliding section 53B of the encoder pressing section 53 is so constituted that it diagonally rises toward the innermost section of a groove section 53A to form an inclined face section 53C. The top section of the encoder 50 inserted to the recess section 52A of the position detecting sensor 52 is covered with a projection section 55.
