PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To economically obtain an aromatic maleimide in an environmentally advantageous way through avoiding the use of any explosive solvent and dispensing with byproduct disposal as well by reaction between a specific aromatic amine and maleic anhydride in the presence of a specific solvent mixture and a specified amount of an acid and the like. SOLUTION: This aromatic maleimide of formula III, IV or the like [e.g. 2,4-bis(maleimido)toluene] is obtained by reaction between (A) an aromatic amine of formula I, II or the like (R is a 1-18C alkyl; (n) is 2-4; (m) is 0-3)(e.g. 2,4-toluylenediamine) and (B) maleic anhydride in the presence of (C) a solvent mixture of (i) 50-99 wt.% of a (halo)hydrocarbon such as toluene and (ii) 1-50 wt.% of a dipolar aprotic solvent such as N-methylpyrrolidone and (D) an acid (e.g. p-toluenesulfonic acid) at 0.1-10 wt.% based on the component B and (E) a polymerization inhibitor (e.g. hydroquinone) at 0.01-2 wt.% based on the component B.
