Biological treatment plant for purifying water. The reactor (2) comprises a tank sealed off from the surrounding atmosphere and at least partially filled with effluent. Gas recirculation means (16) forming a closed system with the tank are used to remove from the reactor and return at least some of it to the water in the tank. An installation for biologically purifying water comprises a reactor containing biologically active material (32), means for supplying contaminated water to the reactor, and means for removing it from the reactor. The reactor is a tank sealed off from the surrounding atmosphere and at least partially filled with contaminated water during operation. Gas recirculation means forming a closed system with the tank are used to remove gas from the reactor and return at least some of it to the water in the tank.
