PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To accurately recognize the direction of an original even in the case of the original or the like on which characters are expressed in while omission on the high-density background image. SOLUTION: Concerning this image recognizing device, when an object original of direction recognition is an original D2 in which characters are expressed in white omission on a high-density background image, prepared histograms H3 and H4 are inverted and made into histograms H1 and H2 as shown in Figure (a) and, based on the inverted histograms, the direction of the original is recognized.
