PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a dot displaying liquid crystal display device permitting a negative mode display with high contrast and fine visibility. SOLUTION: Fixed places of a liquid crystal cell 21 in which liquid crystal molecules are twistedly oriented in directions ranging downwardly from about 90 deg. constitute a display region 29 where voltages are selectively applied and a background region 30 where voltages are not applied. Two polarizing plates 31, 32 are located so that a transmission axis 31a of the front side polarizing plate 31 and a transmission axis 32p of the rear side reflective polarizing plate 32 are parallel with each other. And, a color backlight 33 is located on the back surface of the rear side reflective polarizing plate 32.
