PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reduce the size of a boiler and the emission of hazardous exhaust combustion gas from the boiler. SOLUTION: A burner 3 is installed at one end of a pair of water tube walls 12 and 12 in the longitudinal direction and the gas passage of the burner 3 is formed between the walls 12 and 12 from one end to the other end in the longitudinal direction. Then many vertical water tubes 10 are arranged over nearly the full area of the gas passage with prescribed intervals among the adjacent water tubes 10 in such a way that the tubes 10 faced oppositely to the walls 12 and 12 are arranged zigzag against the tubes 10 in the walls 12 and 12 and the distances between the tubes 10 nearest to the burner 3 and the burner 3 are adjusted to about three times of the diameters of the tubes 10 or shorter and, at the same time, the intervals among the tubes 10 are made equal to the diameters of the tubes 10 or shorter. In the arrangement of the vertical water tubes 10 between the walls 12, the transfer surface densities of the tubes 10 between the walls 12 and 12 are increased toward upstream side from the downstream side of the flowing direction of flame.
