SYSTEM FOR ENCODING AND DECODER

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain an encoding/decoding system for RAID-6 or a multi-track tape system by using a symbol stored on a redundant disk to correct an error of a data code word which can not be corrected by using an included error correction code(ECC) symbol. SOLUTION: An encoder 610 generates a redundant sector so as to encodes and records a corresponding sector from a data disk 612 on a redundant disk. The encoder 610 generates a redundant symbol by using a circuit 100r. The encoder 620 and an error correcting processor 630 correct an error of data stored on the data disk 612. The error is detected by using an ECC symbol stored on a data disk 612. The decoder 620 uses the (m+1) bit representation of an error-free (m)-bit sector and uses (m+1) zeros an error sector to decode the column. The error sector is therefore not read out in column encoding.
