PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a low recharging voltage for a peaking capacitor, while a high clamp voltage is obtained by generating a high clamping voltage during the period in which a magnetic resetting voltage is impressed, and switching the voltage to a low voltage during the period in which the recharging of the peaking capacitor is suppressed. SOLUTION: This pulse power unit is constituted as a clamping voltage generating circuit which can which can switch a high clamping voltage to a low clamping voltage, and vice versa, by providing a semiconductor switch SW1 in parallel with a Zener diode ZD. During the period in which a magnetic resetting voltage which sets a pulse transformer PT to a nonsaturated state is impressed, the power unit generates the high clamping voltage to prevent the secondary side of the transformer PT from turning into a short-circuiting state. During the period in which the recharging of a peaking capacitor Cp is inhibited by conducting a diode D, the unit generates the low clamping voltage to suppress residual charges from becoming higher. Therefore, the recharging voltage of the peaking capacitor Cp can be lowered, while a high clamping voltage is obtained.
