PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a rotary encoder capable of miniaturization and diameter reduction of a motor. SOLUTION: A rotating part such as an encoder shaft 7 provided with a rotary code plate 2, and a fixed part composed of an encoder circuit part such as a light emitting element part 1 and an analog signal processing circuit 5 are constituted in a unified body via bearings 10. The light emitting element part 1 is arranged in the thrust direction between the bearings 10 and the rotary code plate 2. A clamp ring 8 installed between the encoder shaft 7 and the light emitting element part 1 is made to abut against an inner ring of the bearings 10, and fixed to a motor shaft 11 via the encoder shaft 7 by a fastening means 9 like screws.
