PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To make it possible to evaluate whether rubbing cloth has desired rigidity or surface characteristics or not or the rubbing cloth has the desired rigidity and the intra-surface uniformity of the surface characteristics or not even if the rubbing of alignment layers is not actuality carried out. SOLUTION: This method for evaluating the rubbing cloth comprises in applying vibration on reference rubbing cloth under the condition where an object 10 for observation is placed on the rubbing cloth 9 which is a reference for evaluation to move and rotate an object for observation, measuring the moving speed and rotating speed of the object for observation of this time, making the similar measurement even with the rubbing cloth to be evaluated and making evaluation as to whether the rubbing cloth to be evaluated has the desired rigidity and surface characteristics or not according to whether the value of the ratio of the moving speed and rotating speed of the rubbing cloth to be evaluated to the moving speed and rotating speed, respectively, of the reference rubbing cloth is within a range of 0.4 to 2.5 or not.
