PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To enable assiging intensity levels in color in a color liquid crystal display device of a double refraction control system. SOLUTION: This liquid crystal display device is provided with a first liquid crystal display element 1 by which different refaction are generated for every wavelength and peak wavelengths of light rays to be emitted are changed according to impression voltages to perform a color display and a second liquid crystal display element 21 which is provided to be opposed to the first liquid crystal display element 1 and whose light transmittance is changed according to applied voltages. In this case, since the color display can be performed by changing a voltage to be applied on the first liquid crystal display element 1 and a light transmitting quantity can be changed by changing a voltage to be applied on the second liquid crystal display element 21, thus, the assigning intensity levels to enabled in color by the light transmitted through the first and second liquid crystal display elements 1, 21.
