PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To make it possible to prevent alignment disturbance from remaining as a display defect to make response fast and to suppress driving voltage to a lower level by specifying the inclination of liquid crystal molecules on one substrate surface from the substrate normal to a specific angle. SOLUTION: A nematic liquid crystal cell 1 having negative dielectric anisotropy is held between substrates 4 and 5. The disturbance in the alignment is generated by applying a nonuniform pressure as a stimulus from outside on the substrate 4 from above a polarizing plate 10 arranged on the substrate. The process of relieving the subsequent disturbance in the alignment is observed and when the relation of the relaxation time and tilt angle thereof is investigated, the domain walls occurring in the disturbance in the alignment are rapidly relieved and the uniform display is stably embodied without the remaining of the defect in the alignment when the tilt angle from the normal direction of the liquid crystal molecules on the substrate 5 of >=2.5 deg., more preferably >=3 deg. is obtd. Relating to the upper limit of the tilt angle, the upper limit of the tilt angle which assures contrast of >=20 deg., which is an actual reference, is 30 deg. in perpendicular light projection/perpendicular light receiving condition. |
