METHOD FOR SELECTIVE OPERATION ON VIBRATION MODE OF CANTILEVER DEVICE, AND MAGNETIC HEAD SUSPENSION

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a process which can selectively prevent undesirable natural vibration of the suspension. SOLUTION: The magnetic head suspension 2 has a suspension arm 4, a Cardan type suspension 6, and a base plate 8. The magnetic head 10 is supported on an end of the suspension arm 4. The natural vibration frequency of the suspension 2 is determined by its material and its geometric shape. A structured hard material layer 12 is provided so as to selectively act on the natural vibration. The structured hard material layer 12 means that the whole suspension 2 is not necessarily covered with the hard material layer, and it is sufficient if only a corresponding area is covered in a some extent following the existent vibration. The material characteristics and spring rate of the suspension vary by providing the hard material layer, and are made to selectively act on or converted into the natural vibration of the suspension.
