摘要 PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal display device which can improve the utilization factor of the light. SOLUTION: Relating to a liquid crystal display equipped with a surface light source device having a light source 11 and a light transmission plate 13, a uniaxial anisotropic transparent medium 16 provided on a light-emitting surface side of the surface light source device and a liquid crystal panel 17 provided on an outside of the uniaxial anisotropic transparent medium 16, the liquid crystal display is characterized that the uniaxial anisotropic transparent medium 16 is arranged to set its direction of an axis of polarization of light so that contrast of a light observed through the liquid crystal panel 17 is highest based on a refractive index of the uniaxial anisotropic transparent medium 16. A prism array to increase light quantity in a direction vertical to the surface light source device can be arranged between the surface light source device and the uniaxial anisotropic transparent medium or between the uniaxial anisotropic transparent medium and the liquid crystal panel.
