A milling machine for machining simultaneously both sides of elongate or continuous sheet or bar material comprises two oppositely disposed cutters, feed means for feeding the material to the cutters, inlet guide means between the cutters and feed means and outlet guide means disposed after the cutters, the material sliding on the guide surfaces. The upper and lower cutters 2 are carried by slide blocks 11, 10 respectively which may be set to the required spacing by screws 13, 15, the lower block 10 being supported by a wedge 12 and the upper being pressed down by hydraulic cylinders 14. The guides 3, 4 are held in supports 5 which may be adjustable in height and spacing by a wedge device 7 and a screw jack or ram 8, the upper supports 5 being pressurized by hydraulic rams 9. Removal of the cuttings may be assisted by air blown in through channels 20, 21 and air with coolant or lubricant may also be introduced through a shroud channel 23. In a modification (Figs 3, 4, not shown), the guides are adapted to bear on the workpiece only for a short distance immediately adjacent to the cutters so that curved lengths of material can be accommodated. In this case the feed rollers are mounted in vertically slidable spring- located supports which are thereby automatically adjustable to suit the curvature of the workpiece. The machine may be modified to deal with material of other than flat rectangular cross-section. |
