<p>The invention relates to the use of chemical substances which show exclusively thermally induced spin transitions between two spin states stable at room temperature, these transitions being associated with a hysteresis phenomenon, and resulting in an abrupt change in the colour of the molecules, to produce a medium for information storage, processing and/or display by thermal writing, optical scanning and thermal erasing. Especially, in one use, such a medium is produced comprising at least one layer of chemical substances which include a network with a molecule comprising a metal element Fe(II), or Fe(III) or Co(II) in combination with at least one ligand chosen from substituted triazoles which correspond to the formula: <IMAGE> in which the radical R is a CnH2n+1 alkyl, or else the radical R is an amine NL2 where L is chosen from H and an alkyl, this molecule additionally comprising one or a number of anions chosen, for example, from BF4<->, ClO4<->, CO3<2->, Br<-> or Cl <- > , and this network containing a defined amount of water which is not ligand-bonded and which is guaranteed by the presence of a hygroscopic species.
