An arrangement for the measurement of optical spectra has a sandwich construction of optical and electronic components, each in generally separate planes, but which are permanently connected together. The device may have multiple optical channels allowing two or more simultaneous measurements. The arrangement contains light wave guides, a reflection or refraction grating device (3) for spectral resolution, photo-receptors arrays (5) which may be photo-diodes or CCD's, a microprocessor (8), a bi-directional interface (10) for handling control and measurement data, and memory facility (9) for the control program and measurements data. The device may be enclosed in a protective housing or resin -potted.
