The network (FNE, MNE) includes at least one exchange node (VKN, MSC) and terminals (ENG, PPl, MP1, DMH) which are associated, at least occasionally, with the exchange node. A telephone directory data base (FPB, MPB) is provided for the exchange node, which is accessible on the part of the terminal, e.g. as part of a service. The data base and the network are arranged through a protocol in such way, that, after an entry of a search word on the part of a subscriber over his terminal, information associated with the search word is transmitted to the subscriber, and is displayed and stored in the terminal. A keyboard and a corresponding display are preferably provided in the terminal for an alphanumeric entry of the search word or an alphanumeric output of the related information.
