Method of definite permanent changing of the extinction spectrum of dielectric-containing metal particles using intensive laser pulses

The method involves using irradiation by intensive laser light to cause the change. Preferably, ultra short pulses of linearly polarized laser light are used. The irradiation is in at least one extinction band caused by stimulation of surface plasmons in the metal particles. The changes are preferably caused by successive identical irradiation of close enough surface areas such that a uniform effect occurs over any large surface or by different types of irradiation of adjacent areas whose dimensions are defined only by the finite focussing ability of the laser beam.
