The method involves operating a V.24 data transmission apparatus (DUG1,DUG2), a data terminal equipment (DEE), and a data circuit termination equipment (DUE) in a command data transmission mode, when the data terminal equipment, the data circuit termination equipment and the V.24 data transmission equipment are switched on. Command data (KD) are transmitted between the data terminal equipment and the data circuit termination equipment when the autobauding function is activated in the data circuit termination equipment. The transmission is set to either software handshake or hardware handshake by transmitting corresponding command data (KD1,KD2). At least one of the data transmission apparatus detects the transmission type and sends the transmission type, if necessary, to the other transmission apparatus. The first data transmission apparatus switches into a special mode (SM1) allocated to the hardware handshake or into second special mode (SM2) allocated to the software handshake. The second data transmission apparatus switches to a third special mode (SM3) allocated to the hardware handshake or into a fourth special mode (SM4) allocated to the software handshake.
