A hot water beverage maker (10) uses a voltage transformer type heating unit (14) to heat water flowing to the filtering vessel (37). The water flows from a water reservoir (12) to a wound transformer (14) where the water passes through metal tubing that is also the secondary winding (22) of the transformer (14). The secondary winding (22) is shorted. The heated water then flows to the filtering vessel (37) that may contain coffee or tea (38). The water flows through the filtering vessel (37) to a carafe (44) for serving.
