The geographic replication of data replicates selected file system data from a local source to a remote source to provide protection against the loss of data due to a failure, provided by a system having servers at both sources. The local server has an operating protocol in which all data is stored in a nonvolatile memory. A similar facility is provided in the remote server. Status data is relayed between the servers.
