A hydrant has a chamber (11) with a valve connection to the main water supply in the bottom of the chamber and with an upper connection for a standpipe (23). The standpipe is coupled to a stub with a bayonet fitting, with the stub on a pivot mounted slider (24) which normally closes the water outlet and which is swung aside to connect the standpipe to the outlet. The water control valve is operated by an outer connection (15) linked to the valve by a shaft (14).
