SELF-REGULATING HYDROGEN GENERATOR

A hydrogen generating apparatus (10) that includes a reactant with a vapor phase at greater than atmospheric pressure. The apparatus (10) includes a ta nk (14) for housing the reactant, such as ammonia. Ammonia communicates with a reactor (22) having a solid reactant, such as lithium aluminum tetrahydride. A check valve (26) is located between the tank (14) and the reactor (22) and i s used to control the flow of ammonia to the reactor (22). Heat generated by t he reaction is useful in raising the temperature of the reactant in the tank (14). The reactor (22) can also include a gas flow enhancing material that facilitates gas flow through the reactor (22). A filter and getters (46, 50) are employed downstream of the reactor (22) to remove unwanted solids and impurities from the hydrogen gas stream.
